National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI)

IMEX provides a solution based approach to educational engineering labs, bringing ideas to life in working classrooms. Our most recent venture was with the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI).

The College

The Irish Government recognised the importance of fostering an environment that is supportive of the Irish Maritime Industry and signed, on the 13th of February 2003, a €52 Million build and fitting contract to start the construction of the National Maritime College. Located on a site at Ringaskiddy in Cork harbour, close to the naval base, the college represents the first time that a public-private partnership has been used in Ireland to build a third level college.

The minister for education, Noel Dempsey, signed the contract in Dublin with a consortium operating as Focus-Education, which will be responsible for building the college. The building, says the Minister,"will set a world first in navigation technology, involving the biggest single long-term commitment by a simulation provider worldwide".

The establishment caters for about 780 students, bringing together training for the Merchant Marine and Naval Service and also offer facilities to foreign students.

Success Through Partnership

IMEX offers congratulations to everyone involved in this major Public Private Partnership Project, led by the BOVIS Lend Lease team. Special congratulations to Donal Burke, Cork Institute of Technology and Cmdr. Tom Tuohy, Irish Navy, for their perseverance and good humour. It must be very satisfying to see all the vision and effort of the past three years come to life. The location and the facilities provide what is arguably the most impressive Naval training and simulation facilities in Europe. IMEX are honoured to have been tasked with equipping the teaching laboratories and are confident that they will provide outstanding facilities for many years. Throughout this project we have applied the most stringent quality control checks and are pleased to have delivered all items on time and to budget.
